The Beginning
Alex Balcerski had just graduated from the
University of Richmond in September of 2003, when he applied for a job at
a local Atlantic City radio station, WJSE-FM. He interviewed to be an
assistant to Scott Reilly, the promotions director at WJSE. At the
time, Scott was in transition to become the new afternoon drive DJ from
3 to 7 pm. Scotty didn’t hire Alex for the assistant job, but offered him another position as
the board operator for the Howard Stern show. While Alex was new to the
business Scott wasn’t – he started his career with stints on the radio as
"Scotty the Intern," and "Scotty the Employee." The two became friends and
Alex began contributing regularly to Scotty’s Show. Alex even broadcasted
with Scotty for a weeklong WWE trivia contest, and helped him interview
Playboy cover girl and WWE Diva, Sable. The guys realized they had a
unique show that was attracting listeners, and in March of 2004 "The
Scotty and Alex show" was born.
The Afternoon Years
The Scotty and Alex Show took off with a
bang and the guys never looked back. The ideas of "The Short Bus
Talent Show" and "Wedgie Wednesday" were born during this time as the guys
gained a reputation for constantly partying in the studio, being open and
honest about their lives, and taking calls from both the fans and the
detractors.
In January of 2005, WJSE-FM was purchased
by Access 1 Communications which allowed Scotty and Alex to concentrate on
their show full-time. The show started to gain a strong following
after April Fools Day 2005, when the guys had two girls come into the
studio and get completely naked, eat dog food on the floor in exchange for
tickets to see a newly announced Green Day concert in Atlantic
City. However there was NO SHOW and the ultimate prank was pulled on
the girls.
The guys continued with antics such as; "The Women's Farting Olympics," "The Ass Avenger," "Dildo
Drumming," "Sex Toss," and "Nipple Racing." In the spring of 2005,
The Scotty and Alex Show was rated number 1 by Abritron for males 18-34,
the first time in WJSE's history.
In September 2005, The Scotty and Alex
Show proved that they were not just a couple of idiots. They organized a
car wash to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and in 4
hours raised more than $22,000.
In November 2005, Scotty and Alex
were announced as the replacements for The Howard Stern Show at WJSE.
The Morning Year
January 3rd, 2006, The Scotty and Alex
Show started it's 11 month run as a top rated morning show in Atlantic
City. During this time the Show added, Mark Cucinotta, as its
producer. Mark's trademark anger and impressions quickly caught on
with audience and he immediately became a favorite among the listeners.
During the Spring 2006, Scotty and Alex's ratings among males 18-34 was
the highest among Howard Stern's replacements around the country.
The show
continued with its trademark games and antics including the infamous
Toilet Bowl, in which listeners were fed greasy food and laxatives
until one person had to "make #2."
During S&A's
successful morning stint, they started talking with CBS radio and on
November 13th, 2006 the Scotty and Alex era on WJSE-FM came to an end.
The guys were unable to say goodbye to their Atlantic City audience but
within two weeks were back on the airwaves at night on the legendary WYSP
in Philadelphia.
Free FM 94.1/94 WYSP
Talks
November 20th, 2006, The Scotty and
Alex Show made their debut on Free FM 94.1 WYSP. The guys quickly
adjusted to their new larger and more talkative station. The show
gained a following for such odd and stupid games like Nut Knockers
and for not being afraid to put anyone on the air. The guys also
invented new radio bits such as the "Banana Cam", "Motorboat Mayhem", and
"Feel or No Feel." The show also included many popular phrases like,
"Scotty's a fag!", and "Treats on the Streets." The guys always
ended their show with "Suicide" which had the callers tell the members of
the show to "kill themselves" for things they did during that nights show.
Possibly the
biggest event during this time was when Producer Mark ruined the ending to
the brand new Harry Potter book to people who were waiting in line to
purchase the popular novel on the first day of release. The audio
took place LIVE on the air, which cut out as Mark was assaulted by a
customer.
On August
1st, 2007, S&A released their first "best of" CD titled, Suck My Bit.
The CD featured highlights such as, Alex getting hit with a steel chair,
interviews with celebrities and pornstars, and Scotty talking a potential
jumper off a bridge.
On the
morning of September 11th, 2007, an article that appeared in the
Philadelphia Daily News suggested that WYSP would switch formats and
releasing most of its talk shows. The guys gained knowledge minutes
before going on air that it would be their last show, so they decided to
dedicate it to the listeners and thank them for the past 10 months.
The next morning S&A were let go by WYSP-FM.
